Hot pepper lovers rejoice! Not only is spicy a tasty addition to any meal, but it can also help extend your life too!

Preliminary research is showing that consuming hot peppers regularly may reduce the risk of death from heart disease, cancer, and general mortality.

The records of over 500,000 people in the US, Italy, China and Iran were analyzed to compare those who ate hot peppers vs those that have never eaten hot peppers.

Eating hot peppers reduces the following relative risks:

  • 26% reduction in cardiovascular mortality
  • 23% reduction in cancer mortality
  • 25% reduction in all-cause mortality

Previous studies have already shown that hot peppers are loaded with antioxidants, anticancer, blood-glucose regulation, and anti-inflammatory properties due to the key ingredient, capsaicin. Capsaicin is what gives hot peppers their signature “burn”. Four new large international studies analyzed by American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2020 has shown ‘significant’ reductions in disease mortality.

Bo Xu, M.D., a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic’s Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute in Cleveland, Ohio was surprised that hot pepper consumption reduced overall mortality by 25%, “It highlights that dietary factors may play an important role in overall health,” said Dr. Xu.

The exact reasoning for the reduction in mortality is still unknown so more research is needed. Researchers will need to focus more on what makes hot peppers so special. For example, we need to know varieties of chilies, heat levels, quantities so you can implement in your own diet to get these benefits.

A lot is still unknown and the research is continuing, but this is great news for everyone that loves spicy. Dr. Xu will be publishing a scientific article soon.
